Kylian Mbappé’s scoring streak for Madrid has some wondering if he’ll overtake Cristiano Ronaldo

Kylian Mbappé continues to impress with his scoring prowess at Real Madrid, drawing comparisons to the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo. After netting his 23rd goal in just 22 Spanish league games during Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Valencia, coach Álvaro Arbeloa suggested that Mbappé could potentially follow in Ronaldo’s footsteps at the club.

Arbeloa acknowledged the seemingly insurmountable achievements of Ronaldo during his time at Madrid from 2009 to 2018, where he shattered numerous club records. However, he expressed confidence in Mbappé’s ability to possibly surpass Ronaldo’s legacy, citing the French striker’s exceptional talent and potential.

At 27 years old, Mbappé joined Real Madrid last season and wasted no time in matching some of Ronaldo’s impressive goal-scoring feats. In 2025, he equaled Ronaldo’s club-record tally of 59 goals, showcasing his ability to make a significant impact on the team.

Mbappé himself has expressed admiration for Ronaldo, calling him his idol and the best player in Real Madrid’s history. The young forward has started the current season in stellar form, already notching nine goals in seven matches. His total of 43 goals in 35 appearances for club and country this season further solidifies his status as one of the world’s top players.

Arbeloa, a former Madrid defender and teammate of Ronaldo, lauded Mbappé as the best player in the world based on his consistent performances. He believes that Mbappé has the potential to surpass Ronaldo’s numbers with Madrid, a sentiment echoed by Mbappé’s teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Despite Mbappé’s on-field success, he recently found himself in hot water for criticizing the officiating during the Valencia match, with television cameras capturing him using the word “clown” towards a referee. Nonetheless, Madrid’s winning streak in the league has propelled them to just one point behind Barcelona in the standings.

Looking ahead, Madrid will face José Mourinho’s Benfica in the Champions League knockout phase, setting the stage for Mbappé to further showcase his talent on the European stage. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Mbappé as he continues his quest to emulate the greatness of Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid.
