L.A. Top Prosecutor Discusses Menendez Bros Retrial Rejection

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman held a press conference to address the failed retrial bid of Erik and Lyle Menendez. The brothers were seeking a new trial but were unable to prove their case, with Hochman previously describing their attempt as a “Hail Mary” move.

During the press conference, Hochman reiterated his stance against parole for the Menendez brothers, citing their lack of acceptance of responsibility for the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. He criticized their self-defense strategy as a “bold-faced lie” in light of the evidence presented.

Hochman also mentioned that he had not been in contact with the extended family of Erik and Lyle following the judge’s decision. He clarified that any potential release for the brothers would have to go through California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, emphasizing that their case had been under his review for years.

The Menendez brothers were recently denied parole for three years and were resentenced to 50 years to life in prison in May. Prior to the resentencing, they had been serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents in Beverly Hills.

Their legal team had pursued a writ of habeas corpus as part of their efforts to secure a retrial, citing evidence related to sexual abuse allegations against their father, Jose. Despite the setbacks, Erik and Lyle’s loved ones have continued to support them, refusing to give up hope for their release.

The case of the Menendez brothers remains a complex and controversial one, with Hochman standing firm in his opposition to their potential parole. As the legal battle continues, the future of Erik and Lyle Menendez remains uncertain.
