LA hardware stores were front for $4.5 million cargo theft ring: police
Two seemingly ordinary hardware stores in Los Angeles turned out to be sophisticated fronts for a massive cargo theft operation that raked in a staggering $4.5 million worth of stolen goods from trains, trucks, and cargo ships, according to authorities.
DJ General Tool & Wire, with locations in Montebello and Huntington Park, was found to be a distribution hub for an organized crime ring that targeted valuable merchandise from various transportation networks in Southern California, the LAPD revealed.
The stolen inventory included high-end power tools, e-bikes, and appliances from renowned brands such as Dyson, Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita, as reported by investigators to the Los Angeles Times.
Dojoon Park, the owner of the stores, was arrested in Montebello on suspicion of receiving stolen property. Prosecutors are gearing up to file charges that could potentially lead to several years of prison time for Park.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated at a press conference that they are evaluating the extent of Park’s crimes and anticipate bringing forth charges that could result in significant prison sentences.
This bust is part of a broader crackdown on sophisticated cargo theft operations that have been a recurring issue in Los Angeles transportation hubs in recent times. Union Pacific Police, Los Angeles Port Police, and LAPD investigators collaborated to connect specific cargo theft incidents to the merchandise being sold at Park’s stores and online platforms.
Police Chief McDonnell highlighted the far-reaching repercussions of cargo theft, emphasizing that it impacts retailers, distributors, and consumers alike. Safeguarding the integrity of the supply chain is crucial for public safety and the economic stability of Los Angeles.
Hochman issued a stern warning to others engaged in similar criminal activities, vowing aggressive prosecution for anyone involved in cargo theft or fencing operations. Fencing operations involve illegal businesses that sell stolen goods at discounted prices to unsuspecting buyers.
The investigation into DJ General Tool & Wire is ongoing, with additional arrests expected as authorities work to dismantle the entire criminal network. LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton affirmed that they intend to target every individual involved in the theft operation, from the initial theft to the eventual selling of stolen goods.
The hardware store operation seizure is just one of LAPD’s successful recoveries in cargo theft this year. Investigators have already confiscated nearly $4 million in stolen cargo from organized crime rings, including $2.7 million worth of bitcoin-mining computers.
Detectives have noted a rise in the sophistication of criminal tactics used to target and intercept valuable goods within Southern California’s expansive transportation infrastructure. The dual-location setup of the theft ring allowed them to process and distribute large quantities of stolen merchandise while maintaining the facade of a legitimate hardware retail business.
