Demond Wilson, famous for his role as Lamont Sanford on the hit 1970s sitcom “Sanford and Son,” passed away in Palm Springs on Friday at the age of 79. According to his son, Wilson succumbed to complications related to cancer, as reported by TMZ.

Born Grady Demond Wilson in Valdosta, Georgia, Wilson grew up in New York City, where he began performing at the legendary Apollo Theater at the young age of 12. After serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, he pursued a career in entertainment, first in New York and later in Los Angeles.

Wilson’s big break came when he landed the role of Lamont Sanford, the son of Fred Sanford played by Redd Foxx, on the NBC series “Sanford and Son,” which aired from 1972 to 1977. The show was a huge success and Wilson’s portrayal of Lamont endeared him to audiences across the country.

Following the conclusion of “Sanford and Son,” Wilson went on to play Oscar Madison in “The New Odd Couple,” a short-lived ABC series co-starring Ron Glass. Despite its brief run, Wilson’s performance was well-received by fans and critics alike.

Throughout his career, Wilson made appearances on various television shows such as “Mission: Impossible” and even ventured into film with roles in movies like “Dealing: Or the Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick Lost Bag Blues.” However, it was his role on “Sanford and Son” that solidified his place in television history.

In addition to his acting career, Wilson also delved into writing Christian books and eventually became a minister in the Church of God in Christ. He was a devoted family man, having six children with his wife, Cicely Johnston, who is a model.
