Larry Summers resigns from OpenAI board and other roles after Epstein emails released

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers announced his resignation from the board of OpenAI and other positions following the release of emails between him and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Summers stated that he will be stepping back from his public commitments in light of the controversy surrounding the emails.

In a statement, Summers expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served on the board of OpenAI and mentioned his excitement about the company’s potential. He also announced that he will be going on leave from teaching at Harvard University, where he was serving as a director. His decision to go on leave was deemed to be in the best interest of the Center as Harvard undertakes a review.

Apart from OpenAI and Harvard University, Summers also announced his resignation from positions with Bloomberg News, The New York Times, the Brookings Institution’s Hamilton Project, the Center for American Progress, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and the Yale Budget Lab. This decision comes after the release of emails showing regular communication between Summers and Epstein during the last years of Epstein’s life.

Although there is no evidence of illegal conduct on Summers’ part, the emails raised concerns about his association with Epstein. Summers, who served as Treasury Secretary in the Clinton administration and was a key economic adviser in the Obama administration, was teaching two classes at Harvard University before going on leave.

Harvard University is conducting a review of information concerning individuals included in the newly released Jeffrey Epstein documents to determine if any actions are warranted. The House and Senate recently voted to require the Justice Department to release its files related to Epstein, prompting President Trump to call for an investigation into Epstein’s relationships with Summers, former President Bill Clinton, and other high-profile Democrats.

Epstein was facing sex trafficking charges when he died by suicide in a New York City jail in 2019. He had previously pleaded guilty to two prostitution counts in a Florida court in 2007 as part of a controversial deal to avoid federal charges.

The developments surrounding Larry Summers and his resignation from various roles highlight the ongoing scrutiny of individuals associated with Jeffrey Epstein and the need for transparency and accountability in such matters.
