Larry Summers to step down from Harvard amid Epstein scrutiny
Larry Summers, former Treasury Secretary, has announced his resignation from Harvard University, where he holds academic and faculty positions. This decision comes as a result of an ongoing review by the university regarding documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, recently released by the government.
Summers, who has been on leave from the university since November, also stepped down from his role as the co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government. In a statement, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to teach and work with students and colleagues at Harvard for the past 50 years.
Following the release of conversations between Summers and Epstein, the late sex offender, Summers made a public statement expressing deep shame and taking full responsibility for his actions. He acknowledged the pain caused by his continued communication with Epstein and announced his decision to step back from public life.
Summers’ ties to Epstein include multiple flights on Epstein’s aircraft and Harvard’s acceptance of donations from Epstein during Summers’ tenure as university president. However, all gifts were received before Epstein’s guilty plea in 2008, and there is no evidence to suggest Summers was involved in Epstein’s criminal activities.
As he prepares to retire from his Harvard professorship, Summers looks forward to engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on global economic issues. His resignation marks the end of an era at Harvard University, where he has played a significant role in academia and public policy.
