‘Last Chance U’ coach John Beam voiced concerns about college’s security two days before ‘targeted,’ deadly shooting

Legendary football coach John Beam expressed concerns about campus security at Laney College just days before he was tragically killed in a “targeted” shooting. The 66-year-old coach shared his worries about the lack of security at the college’s field house during a “Taco ‘Bout Safety” event on Nov. 12, just two days before his death.

Beam was alarmed by the lack of intervention from security guards after a recent theft at the field house. He pointed out the inadequacy of having only six guards covering four campuses within the Peralta Community College District, leaving the campus vulnerable.

The beloved coach also mentioned feeling more exposed since the school ended its contract with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in 2020, relying solely on unarmed security guards. This decision left Laney College without armed deputies to provide protection.

On Nov. 13, Beam was shot in the head on campus and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Cedric Irving Jr., 27, was charged with murder in connection with the targeted killing of the coach. Irving, who had a fixation on Beam, believed the coach had used black magic on him and others, according to police sources.

Irving, a former player at Skyline High School where Beam coached, was arrested based on campus surveillance footage. Despite not having direct contact with Beam on the field, Irving was known to frequent the Laney campus. Oakland Police Assistant Chief James Beere described the shooting as a deliberate act.

During his court appearance, Irving did not enter a plea and was charged with murder. He is being held without bail and faces up to 50 years to life in prison if convicted. The motive behind Beam’s death remains undisclosed as investigators continue their probe.

Despite the tragic loss of Beam, his impact on his players and the football community remains profound. Known for his success in helping players transition to top-tier schools and his appearance on the Netflix series “Last Chance U,” Beam’s legacy lives on through the relationships he built and the achievements of his former players.

As the investigation into Beam’s death unfolds, the community mourns the loss of a beloved coach and mentor. The need for improved campus security measures at Laney College has come to the forefront, highlighting the importance of ensuring the safety of students and staff in educational institutions.
