‘Last Samurai Standing’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix
Netflix has officially announced the renewal of the hit Japanese period-action series, “Last Samurai Standing,” for a second season. The show, set during Japan’s Meiji period in the late 19th century, follows the story of 292 samurai warriors competing in a deadly contest at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple for a grand prize of 100 billion yen. Protagonist Shujiro Saga, portrayed by Okada Junichi, enters the dangerous competition to save his ailing wife and child.
The epic battle royale series quickly rose to the top spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English Series) chart and garnered top rankings in 88 countries. In Japan, it held the number one position for four consecutive weeks, solidifying its place as one of the country’s most popular recent releases. Additionally, “Last Samurai Standing” made history as the first all-Japanese production to be nominated in the best foreign language series category at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Okada Junichi not only stars as the lead actor in the series but also serves as a producer and action choreographer, collaborating with director Fujii Michihito. The ensemble cast features some of Japan’s most prominent talents, including Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, and Masahiro Higashide, among others.
Expressing his excitement for the second season, Okada stated, “I’m pleased to see that ‘Last Samurai Standing’ has reached global audiences and has been confirmed for a second season. I’m excited to get back into this wild world and once again charge into battle with the production team.” Director Fujii added, “I’m very pleased and relieved that ‘Last Samurai Standing’ has been such a big hit outside Japan. I’m also honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season. There’s no doubt that Season 2 will be even bigger and better than the first.”
Based on Imamura Shogo’s “Ikusagami” novel series, which won the 166th Naoki Prize in 2021, “Last Samurai Standing” is a thrilling adaptation brought to life by directors Yamaguchi Kento and Yamamoto Toru alongside Fujii. Oshida Kosuke serves as the producer of the series.
Fans can anticipate even more energetic and action-packed episodes in the upcoming season of “Last Samurai Standing,” promising a continuation of the gripping storyline and dynamic performances that captivated audiences worldwide.
