Leaders Vow Memphis Will Not Fall To Trump
After Trump announced that he was too scared to go to Chicago, so he is sending the National Guard to Memphis instead, city and state leaders have been speaking out about crime in Memphis and what they really need Trump and his party to do.
Tennessee state senator London Lamar (D) appeared on MSNBC’s The Weekend on Saturday and expressed the need to invest in local policing and allow local leaders to take the lead in making Memphis safe. She highlighted the lack of investment in healthcare, affordable housing, and increasing wages as contributing factors to the crime challenges facing Memphis and other major cities across the United States.
Lamar emphasized the importance of long-term solutions, such as improving programming for children, healthcare access, and affordable housing, rather than relying on short-term measures like sending in the military. She criticized Republican policies that have led to an increase in crime, pointing to the loosening of gun laws as a major contributing factor.
In a powerful statement, Lamar reaffirmed the strength and resilience of Memphis, citing its history of justice and fighting for what is right. She made it clear that Trump’s decision to send the National Guard to Memphis is nothing more than a political stunt and will not break the city’s spirit.
Trump’s so-called war on crime has been called out as a publicity stunt aimed at diverting attention from his administration’s failures and scandals. His decision to target Memphis is made easier by the lack of legal challenges he will face in Tennessee compared to blue states with Democratic governors. However, Memphis, as a majority-minority city, is not going to be an easy target for Trump’s fear-mongering tactics.
As Memphis stands strong against Trump’s attempt to use the National Guard for political gain, it is clear that the city will not fall victim to his divisive rhetoric. Instead, Memphis will continue to fight for justice, equality, and a better future for all its residents.
The resistance of Memphis to Trump’s actions serves as a reminder that communities will not be intimidated or silenced in the face of injustice. By coming together and standing up for what is right, Memphis is setting an example for the rest of the country to follow.
