‘Led by an immigrant’: New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani calls out Trump in victory speech

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani delivered a triumphant victory speech to a jubilant crowd in Brooklyn, declaring that the future of the city is now in their hands after toppling a long-standing political dynasty. The 34-year-old democratic socialist is set to become the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, marking a historic moment in New York City’s political landscape.

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani faced scrutiny over his identity, with accusations of Islamophobic attacks from his opponents, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Vice President JD Vance. Despite these challenges, Mamdani stayed true to his message of unity and progress for all New Yorkers.

In his victory speech, Mamdani directly addressed President Donald Trump, defiantly stating that New York City will remain a city of immigrants, led by an immigrant mayor. He emphasized the need for hope over tyranny, big money, and small ideas, rallying his supporters to believe in the possibility of positive change.

The mayoral race saw Mamdani defeat both Cuomo, who ran as an Independent after losing in the primary, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s grassroots campaign gained momentum as voters turned out in record numbers, with over 2 million residents casting their ballots.

Following his projected victory, Cuomo gracefully conceded the race, acknowledging the mandate for change that New Yorkers had delivered. Sliwa also offered a heartfelt concession speech, vowing to continue fighting for a safer New York.

Mamdani’s platform focuses on affordability and social welfare, with plans to freeze rent for rent-stabilized apartments, provide universal childcare, and offer free bus services. He has proposed a 2% tax hike on high-income residents to fund these initiatives, emphasizing the need for a government that works for all New Yorkers.

As Mamdani prepares to take office, he faces high expectations from the city’s residents. With a message of hope and unity, he is determined to fulfill his promises and lead New York City into a new era of progress and prosperity.
