Ledecka’s quest for Olympic snowboarding three-peat comes to a shocking halt
Ester Ledecka, the Czech snowboarder, had her hopes dashed of making history by winning gold medals at three consecutive Olympics when she lost in the quarterfinals of the parallel giant slalom event in Livigno, Italy. She was narrowly defeated by Austria’s Sabine Payer by just 0.06 seconds.
Ledecka, who had been a dominant force in the sport, had not lost a PGS World Cup race in almost two years and had consistently been on the podium in her last five races. Her groundbreaking achievement in 2018, where she won gold in both snowboarding and skiing events at the same Olympics, had set high expectations for her performance in this year’s games.
The 30-year-old athlete was aiming to clinch victories in both the Alpine women’s downhill and PGS events, but had to choose between the two as they were scheduled on the same day. Opting for snowboarding, Ledecka unfortunately fell short of defending her title, with her defeat coming shortly after Lindsey Vonn’s wipeout in the downhill race.
Despite this setback, Ledecka still has a chance to redeem herself in the skiing super-G event later in the week. Leading up to the Olympics, she had focused primarily on skiing, participating in nine Alpine races and securing one podium finish, compared to just one snowboarding event which she won.
The unexpected defeat came at the hands of Sabine Payer, who had two victories this season and was tied for the top spot in the FIS snowboarding points list. Payer’s strong performance in the quarterfinals, where she maintained a lead throughout the race, secured her victory over Ledecka.
With Ledecka out of the running, the spotlight now shifts to Austria’s Anna Gasser, who has the opportunity to become the first snowboarder to win three consecutive Olympic titles. Gasser will be competing in the big air event later on Sunday, while Chloe Kim will be aiming for her own three-peat in the halfpipe contest starting on Wednesday.
