Lee Chang-dong Sets Return With Netflix’s ‘Possible Love’
Lee Chang-dong Returns with “Possible Love” on Netflix
Acclaimed Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong is set to make his return to features with “Possible Love” (working title), a relationship drama that will debut on Netflix. This project marks his first feature film since 2018’s “Burning,” following his directorial work on the short film “Heartbeat” in 2022.
The story of “Possible Love” revolves around two couples whose contrasting lifestyles lead to unexpected intersections, causing disruptions in their seemingly stable routines.
The cast of the film includes familiar faces from Lee’s previous works. Leading the ensemble is Jeon Do-yeon, known for her award-winning performance in Lee’s “Secret Sunshine,” which earned her the Best Actress prize at Cannes in 2007. She will play the role of Mi-ok, alongside Sul Kyung-gu as her spouse Ho-seok. This marks the fourth collaboration between Jeon and Sul, having previously appeared together in “I Wish I Had a Wife,” “Birthday,” and “Kill Boksoon.”
Sul Kyung-gu, who has previously worked with Lee on “Peppermint Candy” and “Oasis,” is also part of the central quartet, along with Zo In-sung as Sang-woo and Cho Yeo-jeong as Ye-ji.
Screenwriter Oh Jung-mi, who co-wrote Lee’s acclaimed film “Burning,” reunites with the director for “Possible Love.” The production is backed by Pine House Film, the same company that supported Lee’s 2018 feature.
Known for his psychologically complex narratives that delve into Korean social dynamics through intimate character studies, Lee has garnered recognition at various film festivals. His past works have been honored at Venice and Cannes, with awards for directing, performances, screenplay, and overall film quality.
Production companies involved in “Possible Love” include Pinehouse Film Co., Ltd., Anonymous Content, LLC, and Nowfilm Co., Ltd.
The cast members have been busy with recent projects, with Sul Kyung-gu starring in “A Normal Family,” “Idol,” and “The Merciless,” Jeon Do-yeon appearing in “Kill Boksoon” and “Revolver,” Zo In-sung in “Moving” and “Escape from Mogadishu,” and Cho Yeo-jeong known for her roles in “Parasite” and “Hidden Face.”
