Joe Bugner — a legendary boxer known for his resilience and sportsmanship, has passed away at the age of 75.
The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed Bugner’s death at his residence in Brisbane, Australia, expressing their condolences to his loved ones.
Bugner, originally from Hungary but raised in England since childhood, began his professional boxing career at the age of 17 in 1967.
By the early 1970s, Bugner had achieved the titles of British and European boxing champion. Despite losing to both Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 12-round decisions, his valiant efforts earned him widespread admiration within the boxing community. He notably faced Ali in a world championship bout in 1975.
In a remarkable comeback in 1995, Bugner clinched the Australian heavyweight title at the age of 45. He concluded his career with a record of 69 wins, 13 losses, and 1 draw, with 41 victories coming by way of knockout.
Aside from his boxing prowess, Bugner also made a mark in the film industry, starring in various movies including the classic “Street Fighter” alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme and a series of Italian films with Bud Spencer.
Joe Bugner will be remembered for his indomitable spirit and contributions to both the boxing ring and the silver screen. He leaves behind a lasting legacy at the age of 75.
