LI man, 71, shoots stranger chasing him outside Starbucks: cops, DA
A 71-year-old man from Long Island was taken into custody for shooting a stranger who was chasing him outside a Starbucks in Huntington over the weekend. The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. on Saturday, with John Rech allegedly injuring a 21-year-old man in front of the coffee shop located at 1 Wall St.
The criminal complaint filed against Rech indicates that he shot the younger man in the stomach and leg, causing serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The victim underwent surgery at Huntington Hospital following the altercation. It remains unclear why the Fort Salonga man was pursuing Rech at the time of the incident.
Authorities confirmed that Rech, a resident of Huntington, possessed a valid license for the firearm used in the shooting, which was recovered at the scene. He has been charged with felony assault in connection with the incident and was ordered to be held on $25,000 cash bail, $50,000 bond, or $250,000 partially secured bond. Rech is scheduled to appear in court on January 15, as per the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Robert Macedonio, Rech’s attorney, expressed confidence in his client’s innocence, stating that Rech is a licensed firearm holder authorized for concealed carry. Macedonio mentioned that they are in the process of gathering video footage from various locations in Huntington Village to support their case. He believes that the evidence will demonstrate that Rech acted lawfully and within his rights, ultimately leading to the dismissal of the charges against him.
The incident has raised concerns in the community and sparked discussions about gun ownership and self-defense laws. As the legal proceedings unfold, the outcome of Rech’s case will be closely monitored by both local residents and legal experts.
