LI mom played dead as irate teen fatally knifed grandma 35 times: DA

A horrific incident unfolded in a Long Island home on April 7, where a 15-year-old boy’s rage over having his computer taken away led to a tragic and violent outcome. The teen, who remains unnamed, engaged in a heated argument with his 36-year-old mother, Vanessa Chendemi, and 56-year-old grandmother, Concetta Chendemi, in their Selden residence.

The altercation escalated when the mother confronted her son about skipping classes, and the grandmother suggested that his computer be confiscated as a form of discipline. Enraged by this suggestion, the teen grabbed a knife and attacked his grandmother before turning the weapon on his mother. Vanessa Chendemi, in a desperate bid to survive, played dead as her son brutally stabbed her more than 35 times before fleeing the scene.

Despite her grave injuries, the mother managed to stumble outside and seek help from a passing driver, who promptly called 911. Meanwhile, the grandmother succumbed to her wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Vanessa Chendemi was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she continues to recover from the severe injuries inflicted by her own child.

The teen was apprehended later that evening and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder. Following his arraignment before Judge Karen Kerr, he was remanded without bail as the legal proceedings move forward. If convicted of the top count, the teen could face a sentence of 15 years to life behind bars.

Suffolk County District Attorney Tierney expressed deep sorrow over the tragic events, acknowledging the profound impact on the family. She emphasized the importance of seeking justice for the victims of this senseless and horrific act of violence. The case is set to return to court on May 21, where further legal proceedings will determine the fate of the accused teenager.
