Lionel Messi avoids punishment after viral referee chase video
Lionel Messi, the global soccer superstar, has been cleared of any wrongdoing following an incident that occurred after Inter Miami’s 3-0 loss to Los Angeles FC. A video circulating on social media showed Messi seemingly chasing after the referees into their locker room at the LA Memorial Coliseum, with teammate Luis Suárez attempting to restrain him.
The shocking footage captured Messi following the match officials through a doorway before disappearing and then heading back to his club’s locker room. However, after a review of the video, MLS determined that Messi did not enter any restricted areas or the referee’s locker room. This finding was also confirmed by the Professional Referee Organization.
Chris Rivet, the director of communications for the Professional Referee Organization, stated in a statement to The Athletic that Messi did not enter the officials’ locker room, as initially speculated. This clarification puts to rest any concerns about Messi’s conduct after the game.
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano expressed unawareness of any issues Messi had with the officiating, emphasizing that he did not witness any altercation after the match concluded.
While Messi has faced disciplinary action from the league in the past, including fines for violating certain policies, the recent incident was deemed to be without any violation. The soccer star had also previously been suspended for skipping the MLS All-Star Game, which led to frustration and criticism from Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas.
In conclusion, Messi has been exonerated of any wrongdoing in the post-game incident, with MLS and the Professional Referee Organization confirming that he did not breach any protocols. This resolution ensures that Messi can continue to focus on his performance on the field without any lingering controversy.
