Lite-Brite, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots toymaker Burt Meyer dead at 99

The world of toys and games has lost a legend with the passing of Burt Meyer at the age of 99. Meyer may not have been a household name, but his creations like Lite-Brite, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and Mouse Trap have brought joy to countless children over the decades.

One of Meyer’s most famous creations, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, was inspired by a visit to an arcade with his boss, Marvin Glass. The toy, featuring the Red Rocker and the Blue Bomber duking it out in a boxing ring, became a best-seller after its release in 1964. Meyer’s attention to detail and creativity shone through in every aspect of the game, from the design of the robots to the joysticks that controlled their movements.

Lite-Brite, another iconic toy created by Meyer, allowed children to create colorful light displays using translucent pegs on a black grid. This innovative toy, released in 1967, became an instant hit and has sold over 20 million units to date. Meyer’s inspiration for Lite-Brite came from a luminous display on a Manhattan building, showcasing his ability to find inspiration in unexpected places.

In addition to his work on toys, Meyer also dabbled in board games, creating the popular Mouse Trap game where players build a Rube Goldberg-like contraption to catch plastic rodents. His creative genius extended to other games like Pretty Pretty Princess, Catch Phrase, and Gooey Louie.

Meyer’s adventurous spirit extended beyond the world of toys and games. He was a Navy veteran, a pilot, and an avid traveler who explored the world through scuba diving and even trekked to the North Pole at the age of 69. His zest for life and creativity knew no bounds.

Meyer leaves behind a legacy of fun and imagination, survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His impact on the world of toys and games will be felt for generations to come. May his creative spirit continue to inspire and delight children around the world.
