Long Island police rip Gov. Hochul for bragging about decrease in crime hours before cop is shot in face

Long Island Cop Shot in Face Hours After Gov. Hochul Brags About Reducing Gun Violence

A Long Island police officer was shot in the face while executing a search warrant at a North Bay Shore home, just hours after Governor Kathy Hochul celebrated a decrease in crime rates in Suffolk County. The 33-year-old officer, who remains unidentified, was critically injured during the intense police standoff with a deranged homicide suspect on Thursday.

Suffolk PBA President Lou Civello criticized the timing of the shooting, stating, “The irony is not lost on us that the governor was just on Long Island yesterday saying that crime is going down and today we have a Suffolk County Police Officer shot.” Civello emphasized the need for more comprehensive measures to address crime and ensure the safety of law enforcement officers.

While acknowledging Hochul’s efforts in implementing changes to criminal bail and discovery laws, Civello stressed the importance of further reforms to combat violent crime effectively. The governor’s recent event at the Suffolk County Police Academy highlighted a decrease in murders on Long Island, but Civello emphasized the need for continued support and action to address the root causes of crime.

Dr. James Vosswinkel of Stony Brook University Medical Center provided an update on the injured officer’s condition, revealing that the bullet stopped just half an inch away from the officer’s eye, causing a fractured cheekbone. Despite the severity of the injury, the officer is expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect involved in the shooting, Nieves Reyes, was taken into custody by Suffolk police following the incident. Reyes, who is accused of fatally stabbing his coworker, now faces charges of murder and attempted murder.

As Governor Hochul prepares for reelection, her stance on public safety and support for law enforcement will likely be key issues. The Suffolk PBA’s criticism underscores the ongoing challenges in addressing crime effectively and ensuring the safety of both officers and the community.
