Long Island postal worker helps ICE detainee escape, then berates agents in bilingual rant: feds

A Long Island postal worker found herself in hot water after allegedly helping an ICE detainee temporarily escape custody. Tamara Mayorga-Wong, 57, reportedly opened the door of an official vehicle outside the Westhampton Post Office and encouraged the handcuffed detainee to run for it before attempting to drive away in her own car. The detainee was apprehended by authorities, and Mayorga-Wong was arrested after a brief attempt to flee through the building and into her vehicle in a back parking lot.

According to court documents, Mayorga-Wong resisted arrest, kicking at officers and flailing her arms while yelling at the agents in Spanish and English, questioning their actions and morality. She asked them if they were from Mexico and if they had children, challenging them on their choice of profession. Mayorga-Wong had allegedly witnessed agents in “HSI Police” jackets apprehend the man and demanded to see a warrant, claiming they couldn’t proceed without one.

Charged with federal obstruction, Mayorga-Wong could face up to 20 years in federal prison depending on the statute prosecutors apply. The details of the detainee’s arrest and location were not immediately disclosed, and it remains unclear if Mayorga-Wong had any prior connection to the detainee.

During her arraignment in Suffolk County federal court, Mayorga-Wong appeared visibly emotional, scanning the gallery for her family as she quietly cried before the judge. She was released on a $50,000 bond the same day from Suffolk jail. Attorneys for both parties declined to comment following the court proceedings.

The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding immigration enforcement and the legal implications of interfering with federal agents. Mayorga-Wong’s actions have landed her in legal trouble, and the case will likely unfold in the coming weeks as more details emerge.
