Lonzo Ball expected to get waived by Jazz after Cavaliers trade

Lonzo Ball’s NBA Career Hangs in the Balance

The NBA world was abuzz with news of Lonzo Ball’s uncertain future as the Cleveland Cavaliers traded him to the Utah Jazz on Wednesday for two second-round picks, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. However, the Jazz swiftly announced their intention to waive Ball, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes.

Despite being on the brink of being without a team, Ball has garnered interest from several teams, including the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets. The 24-year-old point guard has had a rollercoaster of a career so far, with his latest setback potentially leaving him in limbo.

Ball’s statistics this season have been underwhelming, averaging 4.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in just under 21 minutes per game across 35 appearances. The former second overall draft pick has struggled to find consistency on the court due to injuries and team changes throughout his career.

The Cavaliers’ decision to trade Ball was viewed as a salary dump, as they look to free up cap space and avoid the luxury tax penalties. With the recent acquisitions of Dennis Schröder and Keon Ellis, Ball’s $10 million salary became expendable for the team.

Since entering the league in 2017 as a highly-touted prospect for the Los Angeles Lakers, injuries have plagued Ball’s career, limiting him to just 99 games in his first two seasons. Subsequent trades to the New Orleans Pelicans and Chicago Bulls saw him struggle with knee issues that sidelined him for multiple seasons.

Despite the setbacks, Ball signed a lucrative two-year, $20 million contract with the Bulls in 2024 before being traded to the Cavaliers in July. Throughout his career, he has averaged 10.6 points, 5.6 assists, and 5.3 rebounds, showcasing glimpses of his potential when healthy.

As Ball faces an uncertain future in the NBA, teams will be keeping a close eye on his next move, hoping to capitalize on his talent and potential if given the opportunity. The young guard’s journey in the league has been marred by injuries and setbacks, but with the right team and support, he could still fulfill the promise he showed as a top draft pick.
