Louvre Museum closes after brazen theft of jewels with ‘inestimable’ value

In a shocking turn of events, a group of individuals disguised as construction workers managed to break into the iconic Louvre Museum in Paris. The daring heist took place on a Sunday morning, with the thieves gaining access to the museum’s Apollo Gallery, which houses the French crown jewels and other priceless artifacts.

Reports indicate that the perpetrators used a construction ladder to enter the building and swiftly cracked open display cases containing jewelry that once belonged to Emperor Napoleon and his wife. At least nine pieces of jewelry with significant historical and heritage value were stolen before the thieves made their escape on motorcycles.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the stolen items as “inestimable” in value, emphasizing the gravity of the robbery. It is believed that three suspects were involved in the heist, with the perpetrators wearing construction worker uniforms and hoods to conceal their identities.

The entire operation lasted only about seven minutes, during which the thieves used small chainsaws to open the display cases and seize the valuable jewelry. Authorities suspect that two of the perpetrators entered the Apollo Gallery while the third remained outside to keep watch.

Following the incident, the Louvre Museum was closed for the day as a security measure to preserve evidence for the ongoing investigation. Visitors, including those like Kaci Benedetti from the United States, witnessed the commotion outside the museum as police and forensic officers arrived at the scene.

French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati confirmed the robbery on social media, assuring the public that no injuries were reported. She pledged full cooperation with the authorities to investigate the incident and recover the stolen items.
