Lower clothing prices help inflation fall by more than expected
In November, the UK saw a significant drop in inflation, with prices of food, alcohol, and clothing decreasing. This led to the inflation rate falling to 3.2%, down from 3.6%, which exceeded analysts’ expectations. Lower food prices played a major role in driving down inflation, particularly for items like cakes, biscuits, and breakfast cereals, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The decline in inflation comes just before the Bank of England’s decision on interest rates, with a cut widely anticipated. This decrease in inflation is seen as a positive sign that inflation may have peaked, potentially paving the way for further interest rate cuts next year. Other items that contributed to the lower inflation rate included the cost of tobacco, restaurant meals, hotel stays, furniture, and transportation.
While prices are still on the rise overall, there were decreases in certain items between October and November. Food prices, in particular, saw a month-on-month decrease, defying the usual trend of an increase during this time of year. Chancellor Rachel Reeves expressed her satisfaction with the fall in inflation, highlighting her focus on reducing bills for families across the UK.
The Consumer Prices Index, used to measure inflation in the UK, includes a variety of goods and services such as bread, fruit, and clothing. The drop in inflation triggered a sell-off in the pound, causing it to fall 0.7% against the dollar.
Alyssa Heath, a member of the Band of Bakers collective in Camberwell, noted that months of higher prices had influenced her ingredient choices when baking with the group. While basic items like flour and sugar remain affordable, more expensive ingredients like nuts and dairy have become less accessible due to rising prices.
In terms of food price inflation, while overall food inflation has slowed, prices are still increasing for items like beef, chocolate, milk, and coffee. However, there have been price drops for products like olive oil, flours, and pasta. Black Friday discounts played a significant role in keeping average clothing and footwear prices low in November, with retailers offering heavier discounts this year.
Overall, the decrease in inflation has been welcomed as good news for consumers, particularly during the holiday season. However, it’s important to note that falling inflation does not necessarily mean that the cost of living is getting cheaper, as many households are still feeling the impact of previous price hikes. The outlook for the economy remains uncertain, with ongoing challenges and fluctuations in prices expected in the near future.
