Lucca Seen as a Place of Liberation, Community in Manlio Castagna Film
Lucca Comics & Games: A Magical Celebration of Geek Culture
Film director Manlio Castagna discovered the magic of Lucca in 2018 when he first attended the renowned comic convention. What he initially thought was just a carnival with people in strange costumes turned out to be a place where individuals could truly express themselves and embrace their identities. Lucca Comics & Games is not just a gathering of fans, but a community where people can be whoever they want to be, don masks to reveal their true selves, and celebrate their love for geek culture.
Castagna’s latest documentary, “I Love Lucca Comics & Games,” serves as a heartfelt tribute to the largest comic convention in Europe. For five days, the historic town of Lucca in Tuscany transforms into a Cosplay Mecca, attracting over 300,000 visitors with a plethora of events including book signings, screenings, exhibitions, and concerts. Through the metaphor of the Mandala, Castagna intricately weaves together the stories of organizers, artists, writers, game designers, film directors, and fans, showcasing the interconnectedness of the community.
The film captures intimate moments of fans meeting their favorite artists and writers, highlighting the mutual appreciation and admiration between creators and their audience. Castagna’s dedication to capturing compelling stories led him to film throughout the festival with two camera units, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the event. The documentary features prominent guests such as best-selling authors R.L. Stine and Licia Troisi, rapper Frankie Hi-NRG MC, and comic book artists Pera Toons, Sio, Yoshitaka Amano, and Roberto Recchio.
One of the most touching narratives in the film revolves around a father and son bonding over their shared love of geek culture. Castagna reflects on the transformation of this culture over the years, noting how once niche interests like manga, anime, and Dungeons & Dragons have now become mainstream, fostering a sense of community and acceptance among fans. Lucca Comics & Games is not just a festival but a catalyst for change, creating a space where people can find friendship, love, and belonging.
Through the lens of the Mandala, Castagna emphasizes the collective spirit of Lucca Comics & Games, where thousands of individuals come together to create a vibrant and inclusive environment. As the festival draws to a close, the temporary nature of the event serves as a reminder of the fleeting yet powerful connections forged during the celebration. The memories and anticipation of the next edition keep the spirit of Lucca alive year-round.
Lucca Comics & Games is set to take place from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2, with “I Love Lucca Comics & Games” scheduled for release in Italy on Nov. 10 by I Wonder Pictures. Join the magic and experience the transformative power of geek culture at this extraordinary event.
