Luigi Mangione back in court for 4th day of evidence suppression hearing
Luigi Mangione is back in court for the fourth day of an evidence suppression hearing in the case accusing him of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a New York City sidewalk last year. The testimony will feature two Altoona, Pennsylvania patrolmen who were present at the McDonald’s where Mangione was apprehended after the shooting. One of them, Christy Wasser, was captured on body camera footage searching Mangione’s backpack and discovering a weapon.
The defense is pushing to exclude the contents of the backpack from Mangione’s trial, arguing that the police had no warrant and no justification to search it. During Thursday’s proceedings, defense attorney Jacob Kaplan questioned Patrolman Tyler Frye, who confirmed that Mangione was not belligerent and did not attempt to open his backpack at the McDonald’s.
The bag allegedly contained crucial evidence related to the crime, including a 3D-printed pistol used in the murder of Thompson and a notebook with incriminating statements attributed to Mangione. The prosecution claims that these items serve as both the means and motive for the alleged crime.
The ongoing hearing is expected to extend into the following week, with the judge cautioning both parties against being repetitive and emphasizing that it does not benefit their respective cases. As the proceedings continue, the focus remains on whether the evidence obtained from Mangione’s backpack will be admissible in the upcoming trial.
