“M3GAN” is facing legal troubles as its creators are being accused of plagiarizing another film.
Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Pictures, James Wan, and screenwriter Akela Cooper are being sued by Carl Watts for allegedly copying his 2012 movie, “Paranormal Adoption.”
Watts claims that both films revolve around a girl who forms a dangerous bond with a doll, leading to violent consequences.
He also notes that both movies hint at possible sequels, leaving room for further exploration of the story.
Watts alleges that his script was submitted to a production company that later merged with Lionsgate, potentially giving access to Wan and Cooper.
He also highlights the connection between Cooper and a former Lionsgate employee, suggesting a possible source of the alleged plagiarism.
Watts also points to Wan’s public statements about his interest in creepy dolls as a possible indication of exposure to “Paranormal Adoption.”
Seeking justice, Watts is suing for copyright infringement and demanding a minimum of $5 million in compensation.
“M3GAN” and its sequels have been well-received, but the shadow of plagiarism now looms over the franchise.
