Maggie Gyllenhaal Felt ‘Envy’ Toward Jake Gyllenhaal Early in Careers
Maggie Gyllenhaal Reflects on Sibling Rivalry with Jake Gyllenhaal
Maggie Gyllenhaal recently opened up about her feelings towards her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal’s early career success. In a candid interview with The New York Times, the 48-year-old actress delved into the topic of envy and how it played a role in her relationship with Jake, who is 45.
“I am very interested in envy,” Maggie shared. “I think there’s a reason it’s a seven deadly sin. I’m interested in it in terms of watching other people’s movies come out. Admiration versus envy. What creates it? I think it’s usually feeling starving, like you don’t have enough.”
She went on to explain how she reached out to Emerald Fennell, the director of the upcoming film “Wuthering Heights,” to discuss the feelings of competition and envy that can arise in the industry. Maggie admitted that when Jake first found success as a movie star early on, she may have felt a twinge of envy, even though she wasn’t fully aware of it at the time.
Both Maggie and Jake started their acting careers at a young age, with Jake making his debut in 1991’s “City Slickers” and Maggie appearing in “Waterland” a year later, directed by their father, Stephen Gyllenhaal.
Now, the siblings are set to reunite on screen in Maggie’s upcoming film, “The Bride!” which is a modern retelling of the “Bride of Frankenstein” story. This project marks their first collaboration since the cult classic “Donnie Darko” in 2001, where they played onscreen siblings.
Maggie shared her emotional reaction to asking Jake to be a part of the film, expressing how much it meant to her to work with him again. She reflected on the past distance she felt from her family and Jake, but noted that their recent collaboration has brought them closer together.
When asked if inviting Jake to be in the film was an act of love, Maggie affirmed, “Yeah, and with love.” She emphasized that their bond has only grown stronger over the years, and they are now closer than ever.
“The Bride!” is set to hit theaters on Friday, March 6, and fans can look forward to seeing the Gyllenhaal siblings share the screen once again in this highly anticipated film.
