Mahomes, Chiefs starters to play in preseason opener against Cardinals
The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for their preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes is excited to take the field with the rest of the starters. Coach Andy Reid has decided to send Mahomes out for at least one series, much to the quarterback’s approval.
While some teams have opted to sit their starters for the entire preseason to avoid injuries, Mahomes believes that getting hit once during a game can help him mentally prepare for the rest of the preseason and the regular season. It may come as a shock initially, but Mahomes sees it as a necessary part of the game.
The plan for the Chiefs is to have Mahomes play the first quarter, followed by Gardner Minshew, Bailey Zappe, and Chris Oladokun. This rotation will give each quarterback a chance to showcase their skills and get into game mode.
One of the main focuses for the Chiefs in this preseason opener is their offensive line. With new additions like Josh Simmons at left tackle and Kingsley Suamataia at left guard, the team is looking to solidify their protection for Mahomes. The Super Bowl loss highlighted the need for improvement on the left side of the line, and the Chiefs are hoping their investments pay off.
Additionally, there is competition for the final spots at wide receiver, with some players getting extended looks due to injuries. Mahomes advises the players to continue doing what they have been doing in training camp and to trust Coach Reid’s preparation.
On the other side, the Arizona Cardinals are also planning to play their starters this preseason, a departure from previous years. Coach Jonathan Gannon believes it is the best decision for their team’s development and health.
In other news, Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens was spotted at Chiefs practice, former Raiders coach Antonio Pierce is helping out Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and injured players like CB Kristian Fulton and LB Drue Tranquill are making their way back to the field.
As the Chiefs and Cardinals gear up for their preseason opener, both teams are focused on evaluating their players, testing out new strategies, and getting ready for the upcoming regular season. It will be an exciting matchup to watch as the teams take the field and showcase their talent.
