Major crimes rose by more than double citywide average in AOC’s district

Crime rates in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx and Queens district have skyrocketed by 70% since she took office in 2019, according to a Post analysis of NYPD data. This increase is more than double the citywide average of 30% over the same period. Major crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and auto theft have all seen a significant rise in her district.

The 110th Precinct in Queens, which covers part of the notorious human-trafficking and prostitution hub on Roosevelt Avenue, experienced a staggering 105% surge in major crimes, the highest increase of any precinct in NYC. The 115th Precinct, which serves areas like Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, and north Corona, saw major offenses rise by 85%. The other precincts in Ocasio-Cortez’s district also saw major crime increases above the citywide average.

Residents in the district have expressed frustration with the lack of action from the congresswoman. One Elmhurst resident, Guadelupe Alvarez, criticized Ocasio-Cortez for neglecting the district and allowing it to deteriorate. Alvarez, who has witnessed gang activity, car thefts, and assaults in her neighborhood, no longer feels safe and is considering leaving the area.

Despite pleas from constituents and calls for federal intervention to address the public safety emergency, Ocasio-Cortez has remained silent on the rising crime rates in her district. Critics have also pointed out that her anti-police rhetoric has contributed to the recruitment crisis at the NYPD, making it difficult to address the escalating crime levels.

Critics argue that Ocasio-Cortez’s focus on defunding the police and her failure to address the safety concerns of her constituents are undermining the well-being of the community. The congresswoman’s inaction and divisive rhetoric have only exacerbated the situation, leaving residents feeling vulnerable and abandoned.

The Post’s analysis of NYPD data for Ocasio-Cortez’s district highlights the urgent need for effective leadership and community engagement to address the rising crime rates. Despite repeated attempts to reach out to Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment, no response has been received. The lack of action and accountability from the congresswoman raises concerns about the future safety and well-being of the residents in her district.
