Majority of Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling tariffs: ABC/Post/Ipsos poll

According to a recent ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted via Ipsos’ KnowledgePanel in February 2026, a majority of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s handling of tariffs on imported goods. The poll, which took place from Feb. 12-17, revealed that majorities of Americans across various income backgrounds, genders, age groups, and racial demographics disapprove of Trump’s tariff policies.

Interestingly, the poll also showed that a majority of those who did not vote in the 2024 election disapprove of Trump’s handling of tariffs, as well as almost all of those who voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Over 90% of Americans who disapprove of Trump also oppose his tariff policies.

While most Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of tariffs, there is a divide among self-described non-MAGA Republicans, which include independents who lean Republican and identify as MAGA supporters. A majority of non-MAGA Republicans actually disapprove of Trump’s tariff policies, while most MAGA Republicans support them.

The poll also found that opinions on tariffs have remained stable since last year, with the same share of Americans approving and disapproving of Trump’s handling of the issue. Additionally, rural Americans are split on the issue, while most suburban and urban residents disapprove of Trump’s tariff policies.

Overall, the poll surveyed 2,589 U.S. adults and has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. The methodology of the poll was based on the probability-based Ipsos KnowledgePanel. For more detailed results and methodology, the full PDF can be accessed online.

In conclusion, the poll highlights the widespread disapproval of President Trump’s handling of tariffs among Americans from diverse backgrounds. The data suggests that this sentiment has remained consistent over time, indicating a lack of support for Trump’s approach to trade policies.
