Mamdani calls reports of White House meddling in NYC mayor’s race an ‘affront to our democracy’
Zohran Mamdani, a mayoral candidate in New York City, expressed strong disapproval of reports that the White House is considering offering administration jobs to Mayor Eric Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani called this move an “affront to our democracy” in a statement on Wednesday.
According to The New York Times, President Donald Trump’s advisers have discussed potentially giving Mayor Eric Adams a position in the administration to clear the field for a head-to-head race between Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani and is now running as an independent. The talks also reportedly involved Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
In response to these reports, Mamdani stated, “Today, we have learned what New Yorkers have long suspected — that Andrew Cuomo is Donald Trump’s choice to be the next mayor of this city.” He emphasized that this news signifies an attempt to undermine the democratic process and manipulate the outcome of the mayoral race.
Mamdani expressed confidence in his campaign’s ability to win the election in November despite these developments. He stressed that New York City should be governed by its residents, not by outside political influences.
Both Mayor Adams and Curtis Sliwa denied any involvement in discussions with the White House. Adams’ campaign spokesperson reaffirmed the mayor’s commitment to the race and his dedication to serving the people of New York. Sliwa reiterated his focus on the election and his determination to defeat Mamdani.
Mamdani condemned the reported backroom deals and corrupt agreements that he believes are detrimental to the democratic process. He emphasized the need for transparency and integrity in politics, urging all candidates to prioritize the interests of the city and its residents above personal gain.
The mayoral candidate also raised ethical concerns regarding the news and questioned the credibility of Mayor Adams’ statements. Mamdani emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring that New Yorkers have a voice in determining the future of their city.
In conclusion, Mamdani’s strong stance against political interference and his commitment to upholding democratic principles highlight the importance of integrity and transparency in the electoral process. It is essential for candidates to prioritize the interests of the public and maintain the trust of their constituents.
