Mamdani, other NY lefties rip Trump over Maduro arrest

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani has strongly criticized the Trump administration for the U.S military’s capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife, calling it an aggressive “act of war.” Mamdani personally contacted President Trump to express his opposition to the arrest of Maduro and Flores, who have been fugitives since 2020 on narcoterrorism charges.

Mamdani emphasized his opposition to the pursuit of regime change and the violation of federal and international law. He stated that unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is a violation of international law and emphasized that such actions directly impact New Yorkers, including the Venezuelan community in the city.

Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that the motive behind the raid was not solely about drug trafficking but also about oil and regime change. She criticized the Trump administration’s actions and highlighted the need for a trial to distract from other pressing issues.

Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the raid as a “flagrant abuse of power” by acting without Congressional approval. She expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan community in New York and abroad in their quest for a better future.

House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a joint statement denouncing Trump’s plan to have the U.S temporarily “run” Venezuela until a new leadership transition. They called for immediate briefings for Members of Congress to address the situation.

The controversy surrounding the capture of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores has sparked criticism from various political figures, highlighting the complex dynamics at play in international relations. The situation remains tense as the Trump administration faces backlash for its actions.
