Mamdani’s tax hike will land him ‘Real Estate Agent of the Year’ after inevitable exodus: Kevin O’Leary

Kevin O’Leary, also known as Mr. Wonderful, recently made headlines for his reaction to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s proposed 9.5% property tax hike. O’Leary humorously referred to the proposal as “bat cuckoo crazy” and predicted that Mamdani would win the “Real Estate Agent of the Year” award in the near future for his bold move.

During an appearance on CNN’s “NewsNight,” O’Leary expressed his amusement at the extreme tax hike, stating, “What he is proposing is beyond insane, but I love it. You guys live here, you’re not paying your fair share. You got to pay 110%, that’s the right thing to do because he’s not cutting spending.”

Mayor Mamdani unveiled the significant tax increase as part of his proposed $127 billion preliminary budget plan. The hike was introduced as a warning to Albany and Governor Kathy Hochul, indicating that it would only be implemented if the state government did not grant him the income tax hike he desired for millionaires.

Mamdani emphasized that the tax hikes were a last resort and would only be employed if no other means of achieving a balanced budget were available. However, O’Leary voiced concerns that the initiatives would lead to a mass exodus of New Yorkers from the city, benefiting his own real estate business in Florida.

In a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner, O’Leary suggested that he might meet Mayor Mamdani in Miami within the next 12 to 18 months to present him with the “Real Estate Agent of the Year” award. He expressed his frustration with the influx of New Yorkers, New Jersey residents, and individuals from Massachusetts moving to his neighborhood in Miami Beach.

The discussion on income tax hikes in the city over the past decade became heated, with O’Leary’s enthusiasm prompting host Abby Phillips to ask him to lower his voice. Despite the tensions, O’Leary remained adamant about his stance on the tax proposals, stating, “I’m excited, because I want you to pay not me.”

Adding to the conversation, “The View” co-host Ana Navarro echoed O’Leary’s sentiments, emphasizing the potential for wealthy individuals to find loopholes and avoid paying the increased taxes. She pointed out that it was not necessarily those making a million dollars a year who would be affected, but rather individuals earning $50 million or more who might consider relocating to avoid the tax hike.

Ultimately, the debate surrounding Mayor Mamdani’s tax proposals and the potential impact on New Yorkers continues to spark controversy and discussion among residents and experts alike.
