Tragic Incident Leaves Elderly Man Dead After Altercation with Neighbor

An 82-year-old man, Dean Conover Whetzel, tragically passed away weeks after he was involved in a disturbing confrontation with his elderly neighbor in Manhattan. The incident occurred when Dana Escoffier, 79, allegedly pushed Whetzel to the ground during a heated argument after the two men accidentally bumped into each other while walking in the West Village.

According to witnesses and police reports, Escoffier admitted to shoving Whetzel, claiming it was in retaliation for being bumped into. The violent encounter resulted in Whetzel hitting his head on the sidewalk, causing severe injuries. Despite being rushed to NYC Health/Hospitals/Bellevue in critical condition, Whetzel succumbed to his injuries three weeks later. The medical examiner’s office later ruled his death a homicide on Nov. 6.

Whetzel and Escoffier, who were strangers to each other, lived just around the corner from one another in the neighborhood. The incident shocked the community and raised concerns about the safety of elderly residents in the area.

Escoffier was initially charged with assault and aggravated harassment following the altercation but was later released. It remains uncertain whether he will face additional charges in connection with Whetzel’s death. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 4.
