Man Accused of Posing As Federal Agent, Draining Bank Accounts in $2,800,000 Gold Scam
A Man Arrested in North Carolina for Multimillion-Dollar Gold Scheme
A man from North Carolina has recently been arrested for allegedly orchestrating a sophisticated multimillion-dollar gold scheme. The arrest came after a controlled gold drop was intercepted by police outside of a local Walmart, leading to a dramatic chase and the apprehension of the suspect – 29-year-old Florida resident Michael Francois.
According to a report by CBS17, authorities had been investigating a large-scale gold fraud operation that began when a suspect known only as “Lucas” and his associates posed as federal agents and financial officials to convince a victim that his bank accounts had been compromised.
The fraudulent scheme involved gaining remote access to the victim’s cell phone and personal computer, instructing the victim to wire funds for purchasing gold through a specific firm, providing a photograph of the purchase, and then arranging for the gold to be surrendered at a location near Walmart.
The victim, an elderly individual who wishes to remain anonymous, was defrauded out of a staggering $2.8 million. In response, law enforcement set up a sting operation in an attempt to catch the fraudsters, eventually leading them to Francois. Initial attempts to flee from the authorities resulted in a car crash that left Francois with a head injury.
Michael Francois now faces a slew of charges related to fraud and evading law enforcement, including multiple felonies.
