Man gets 25 years for murder case that relied on enhanced video techniques

A Wicker Park man was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Monday for a 2021 murder case that relied on enhanced video evidence provided by a federal forensics laboratory.

Tommie Brown, 34, pleaded guilty to murder in exchange for the sentence from Judge William Gamboney, according to court records.

The victim, James Madrid, tragically died from six gunshot wounds to his back on the 1400 block of West Division early on August 2, 2021, the day after his 34th birthday, according to public records.

Chicago Police Department surveillance video captured Madrid walking alone on Division Street and encountering a woman who was involved in an argument with a few other individuals around 2:30 a.m., prosecutors revealed.

Madrid intervened in the altercation and exchanged words with the woman, who prosecutors alleged was Brown’s wife. The CPD video showed the woman hitting Madrid with her purse, causing him to fall to the ground.

A nearby resident recorded the incident on her phone from a nearby window and provided the footage to investigators. The video was sent to the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory for enhancement, which revealed Madrid pointing towards the woman and stating, “She messed up.”

Additionally, the enhanced footage showed the woman making a phone call to Brown, describing the situation and urging him to intervene, prosecutors claimed.

Shortly after the call, Brown arrived at the scene in a car registered to his wife. He exited the vehicle and pursued Madrid, ultimately opening fire and striking him six times in the back as he attempted to flee. Police recovered eleven shell casings at the scene, all of which were linked to the same gun.

The sentencing of Tommie Brown marks the closure of a tragic case that exemplifies the importance of utilizing advanced forensic techniques in criminal investigations. The enhanced video evidence provided critical insights into the sequence of events that led to James Madrid’s untimely death.
