Man sentenced to 6 years for sexually assaulting girl near Lane Tech High School

A 35-year-old man, Emmanuel Ortega-Garcia, was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated criminal sexual assault during the commission of another felony. The incident took place in October 2022 when Ortega-Garcia followed a 16-year-old girl from a CTA bus to a fast-food restaurant near Lane Tech High School in Chicago.

According to prosecutors, Ortega-Garcia boarded the bus and sat next to the victim, whom he did not know, asking her questions and making inappropriate physical advances. When the girl got off the bus near the school, she realized Ortega-Garcia was following her and sought refuge in a Wendy’s restaurant where she knew some employees. Unfortunately, none of them were working that day.

The victim sat in a booth at the restaurant, and Ortega-Garcia joined her, prompting her to send a video of his face to a friend at Lane Tech, asking for help. The friend alerted school security, and staff members rushed to the restaurant to intervene. However, before they could arrive, Ortega-Garcia sexually assaulted the girl with his hand, causing damage to her clothing.

Lane Tech staff managed to detain Ortega-Garcia until the police arrived and took him into custody. Despite having no prior criminal record, Ortega-Garcia was sentenced to six years in prison, with a requirement to serve at least 85% of his sentence before being eligible for release. He will receive credit for the time spent in jail during the case proceedings.

This disturbing incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and immediate action in cases of potential danger. It also highlights the swift response and collaboration between the victim, her friend, school security, and law enforcement in apprehending the perpetrator.
