Man who shot CPD sergeant has been wanting to shoot the police since having a ‘spiritual awakening,’ prosecutors say
Chicago Man Detained After Shooting Mother and Police Sergeant
A 26-year-old Chicago man, Treavor Taylor, was detained on Thursday after a shocking crime spree that involved shooting his own mother four times and then opening fire on a Chicago Police sergeant. Taylor reportedly told investigators that he had been wanting to shoot a cop since experiencing a recent “spiritual awakening.”
During a court hearing, Judge James Costello ordered Taylor to be detained on multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and aggravated battery of a peace officer.
The incident began late on Saturday night in the 11300 block of South Indiana Avenue, where Taylor and his 63-year-old mother lived together in a two-flat building. According to Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara, Taylor shot his mother while she was in bed watching television. She sustained gunshot wounds to her thigh, ankle, and buttocks before managing to call for help.
Shortly after shooting his mother, Taylor fled the scene in his Toyota Corolla. Less than two miles away, he encountered a Chicago Police sergeant driving her marked squad car towards the station. Taylor allegedly fired five shots at the sergeant, hitting her in the upper left thigh and damaging her squad car. The sergeant was able to pull over and radio for help.
After the shooting, Taylor’s brother arranged a meeting at a gas station where Taylor was taken into custody by officers. Two 9mm handguns were recovered from Taylor’s car, one loaded with a round in the chamber. Ballistic evidence linked the casings found in Taylor’s car and his mother’s bedroom to the recovered firearms.
During questioning, Taylor allegedly admitted to shooting his mother with the intent of causing her suffering. He also confessed that he wanted to shoot a police officer and didn’t care about the consequences. Taylor had a prior arrest for aggravated speeding in 2019.
Following the incident, Taylor was evaluated for mental health issues before being brought to court. The shocking crime spree has left the community in disbelief at the violent actions of a young man with a troubled past.
