Maniac who slaughtered beloved FDNY paramedic found guilty of murder in the brutal, random NYC attack

The tragic murder trial of FDNY EMS Lt. Alison Russo came to a close on Monday, with the defendant, Peter Zisopoulos, being found guilty of second-degree murder and weapon possession. The jury deliberated for less than an hour before reaching their verdict in Queens Supreme Court.

Throughout the trial, Russo’s family and colleagues had to relive the horrifying events of her brutal stabbing in September 2022. Zisopoulos, who showed little emotion during the trial, was convicted of randomly attacking Russo during her lunch break. The quick verdict brought closure to Russo’s family, who expressed relief at the outcome.

Russo’s brother, Craig Fuoco, spoke after the verdict was delivered, acknowledging that while nothing can erase the pain of losing Alison, the family is ready to start healing and keep her memory alive. Zisopoulos, who could face 25-years-to-life in prison, is set to be sentenced on June 30.

Video evidence presented during the trial showed Zisopoulos knocking Russo to the ground and stabbing her 20 times just a short distance from her stationhouse. The brutal attack, which occurred in broad daylight while Russo was on duty in her uniform, shocked the community.

Despite the efforts of bystanders to intervene, Zisopoulos continued his assault on Russo before fleeing the scene and later being apprehended by police at his apartment. The serrated knife used in the attack was found in his possession and tested positive for both his and Russo’s DNA.

During his testimony, Zisopoulos provided inconsistent alibis for his whereabouts at the time of the murder, further implicating himself in the crime. The conviction of Zisopoulos brought some solace to Russo’s family, friends, and colleagues, who continue to mourn her loss.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz and FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker both expressed their condolences and praised Russo for her dedicated service to the community. While the verdict will not bring Russo back, it serves as a reminder of her heroism and the impact she had on those around her.
