Marine Corps Veteran Found Shot Dead After Uber Shift
A tragic incident unfolded on the night of September 4 in Texas, as Marine Corps veteran Jake Hieu Quoc Nguyen was discovered shot dead on the side of a road after finishing his Uber driving shift. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a possible hit-and-run involving a pedestrian and found Nguyen lying on the roadside about 20 miles outside of downtown Houston. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that Nguyen had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities immediately launched a homicide investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Nguyen’s death. It remains unclear whether the 28-year-old was killed at the location where he was found or at a different spot. Detectives suspect that Nguyen was inside a vehicle that had exited a nearby apartment complex and crashed, leaving tracks in the grass. They believe he was then dragged to the location where his body was discovered, and the perpetrator fled in the vehicle, which also happened to be missing.
Nguyen, who had served four years in the Marine Corps, was working as an Uber driver to support his family. He was the oldest of five siblings and was studying to become an EMT before his life was tragically cut short. His brother, Matthew Nguyen, described him as an easy-going individual who always came through when needed. The family set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses and make ends meet in the wake of their loss.
Uber expressed its condolences over Nguyen’s death, calling it a devastating tragedy, and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement in their investigation. Matthew Nguyen urged the responsible parties to come forward and take responsibility for their actions. The Department of Veterans Affairs is assisting with some of the burial costs for the fallen Marine.
Those with information about the case are encouraged to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest in the case. The family and community are mourning the loss of a hero, and Nguyen’s legacy of dedication and loyalty will continue to live on through those who knew him.
