Matt Rempe broke thumb, underwent surgery after fight with Sharks’ Ryan Reaves

Matt Rempe, the New York Rangers center, recently made a comeback to the lineup after undergoing surgery to repair his left thumb, which he broke in multiple places during a fight with Ryan Reaves of the Sharks early in the season. Rempe described his rehab process as tough but necessary for his return to the ice.

Initially, Rempe focused on gym workouts before transitioning to power skating without a stick. Once he regained enough strength to hold a stick, he gradually incorporated light stickhandling and passing drills into his routine. Despite the challenges, Rempe remained determined to get back on the ice as soon as possible.

Reflecting on the fight that led to his injury, Rempe admitted that he didn’t realize the extent of the damage until after the adrenaline wore off. He recalled looking down at his thumb in the penalty box and realizing that something was wrong. Despite the pain, he continued to play through the fight, unaware of the severity of his injury at the time.

After missing 24 consecutive games, Rempe returned to his fourth-line spot alongside Sam Carrick and Taylor Raddysh. Despite logging the lowest ice time among Rangers forwards in his comeback game against the Ducks, Rempe managed to record one shot on goal, five hits, and one takeaway. He also resumed his role on the second power-play unit, contributing 1:08 of ice time with the man advantage.

In addition to his on-ice contributions, Rempe’s physical presence was evident as he engaged in a scuffle with Anaheim Ducks defenseman Olen Zellweger during the game. Despite his injury, Rempe remained determined to play his part in helping the Rangers secure victories.

Looking ahead, Rempe expressed his eagerness to return to fighting once his thumb fully heals. While he acknowledged the temporary limitation on his ability to drop the gloves, he remained optimistic about his future prospects on the ice. With a few more weeks of recovery, Rempe hoped to be back in top form and ready to contribute in all aspects of the game.

Overall, Rempe’s resilience and commitment to his recovery showcase his dedication to the sport and his team. As he continues to progress in his rehabilitation, fans can expect to see him back in action, bringing his physical presence and skill to the Rangers lineup.
