McKibbin earns a spot in the Masters and British Open with dominant win in Hong Kong Open
HONG KONG Open Champion Tom McKibbin Earns First Trip to Masters
Tom McKibbin secured his first trip to the Masters by dominating the Hong Kong Open with a spectacular 7-under 63 on Sunday. The 22-year-old golfer from Northern Ireland showcased his skills with a wire-to-wire victory, solidifying his spot in both the Masters and the British Open.
McKibbin faced challenges in qualifying for the Masters after joining LIV Golf, a Saudi-funded organization, in 2024. However, the tournament’s criteria underwent changes this year, allowing winners of six national opens to earn coveted invitations.
Entering the final round with a two-shot lead, McKibbin maintained his composure and extended his advantage. A remarkable birdie streak on the back nine, where he birdied four of five holes, further solidified his victory, finishing with an impressive seven-shot lead and a total score of 27-under 253.
Despite a strong performance from Peter Uihlein, McKibbin’s closest competitor, the American’s hopes were dashed after a quadruple-bogey 8 on the 14th hole. Uihlein concluded with a 68, unable to catch up to McKibbin’s exceptional play.
The Hong Kong Open served as a significant opportunity for 29 full-time LIV Golf players, offering them a rare chance to secure berths in both the Masters and the British Open at Royal Birkdale next year. Among the participants were two former Masters champions holding lifetime exemptions, adding to the event’s prestige and competitiveness.
