Melissa Jefferson-Wooden is really motoring

Usain Bolt has pointed out the potential challenge that Dina Asher-Smith, Britain’s record-holder in both the 100m and 200m events, could face from emerging U.S. sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden in future competitions, including the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

Asher-Smith had a tough outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she failed to qualify for the 100m final and finished fourth in the 200m. The women’s 100m event in Paris saw Julien Alfred clinching the gold, followed by Sha’Carri Richardson in silver and Jefferson-Wooden in bronze. In the 200m, Gabby Thomas secured the gold medal, with Alfred and Brittany Brown claiming the silver and bronze respectively.

In a recent interview with The Times, Usain Bolt expressed his thoughts on Asher-Smith’s upcoming challenges, particularly from Jefferson-Wooden. Bolt emphasized the need for Asher-Smith to be prepared for the competition that lies ahead.

Jefferson-Wooden’s performance in 2025 has indeed validated Bolt’s observations. Since the start of her season in April, she has consistently achieved podium finishes. Following her Olympic success in the 4x100m relay and individual bronze in Paris, Jefferson-Wooden has emerged as a prominent figure in U.S. sprinting. At the 2025 USA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, she secured victories in both the 100m and 200m events. Notably, her winning time of 10.65s in the 100m not only set the world lead but also ranked as the fifth-fastest time in women’s 100m history.

On the other hand, Dina Asher-Smith has been diligently preparing for the upcoming challenges. She successfully defended her 200m title at the UK Athletics Championships, setting a meet record of 22.14s to secure her spot at the World Championships. Additionally, Asher-Smith achieved the World Athletics entry standard for the 100m with a time of 10.88s at the Lausanne meet in August 2024, guaranteeing her automatic qualification.

In a separate discussion on the Puma Go Wild podcast hosted by Colin Jackson, Usain Bolt revealed three athletes he wished to race against post his retirement from athletics in 2017. Bolt expressed regret for not being able to compete against Michael Johnson, Don Quarrie, and Wayde van Niekerk in a 200m race due to fitness concerns.

As Bolt reminisces about his illustrious career, fans can only imagine the excitement of witnessing such legendary matchups on the track. As the anticipation builds for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, all eyes will be on Asher-Smith, Jefferson-Wooden, and the other elite sprinters vying for glory on the global stage.
