In a landmark decision, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ruled that Meta does not hold a monopoly in social networking, saving the tech giant from having to spin off Instagram and WhatsApp.
The ruling comes after a historic antitrust trial that concluded in late May, following similar rulings against Google for illegal monopolies in search and online advertising. This latest decision deals a blow to the tech industry’s once unchecked growth.
Judge Boasberg stated in his ruling, “The FTC must show that Meta continues to hold monopoly power now. The Court’s verdict today determines that the FTC has not done so.”
