Meta signs 3 deals for nuclear energy to power AI data centers
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has recently made significant strides in powering its artificial intelligence data centers with clean energy. Through partnerships with TerraPower, Oklo, and Vistra, Meta has secured enough energy to power the equivalent of about 5 million homes.
The centerpiece of Meta’s clean energy initiative is the Prometheus AI data center, currently under construction in New Albany, Ohio. This 1-gigawatt cluster, spread across multiple buildings, is expected to come online later this year. The financial terms of the deals with TerraPower, Oklo, and Vistra have not been disclosed.
In a statement released on Friday, Meta announced that these deals will support up to 6.6 gigawatts of new and existing clean energy by 2035. This move aligns with Meta’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. A single gigawatt of power can typically light up around 750,000 homes.
The agreement with TerraPower involves funding for the development of two new Natrium units capable of generating up to 690 megawatts of firm power, with delivery expected as early as 2032. Meta also has rights to energy from up to six additional Natrium units, capable of producing a total of 2.1 gigawatts by 2035.
Additionally, Meta will purchase over 2.1 gigawatts of energy from two operating Vistra nuclear power plants in Ohio. This includes energy from expansions at these plants and a third Vistra plant, Beaver Valley, located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The partnership with Oklo will contribute to the development of a 1.2 gigawatt power campus in Pike County, Ohio, to support Meta’s data centers in the region.
These nuclear power agreements follow Meta’s earlier deal in June with Constellation Energy for a 20-year power purchase agreement from a nuclear plant in Clinton, Illinois. The company remains committed to sourcing clean and reliable energy for its operations, promoting sustainability and supporting the growth of the American nuclear supply chain.
