Mexican soldiers accidentally cross US border, surround Americans while looking for drug traffickers, gunrunners

Recently, a bizarre incident occurred in New Mexico when a group of heavily armed Mexican soldiers accidentally crossed over the US border while on a mission to search for drug traffickers and gunrunners. The soldiers found themselves surrounding two American volunteers, Abbey Carpenter and James Holeman, who were part of the humanitarian group Battalion Search and Rescue, which aids in searching for lost migrants in the desert.

Upon encountering Carpenter and Holeman, the soldiers were unaware that they had crossed into US territory. They questioned the volunteers about their presence in Mexico, to which Carpenter showed them her GPS tracker confirming their location in the US. Despite the tense situation, Carpenter mentioned that she never felt threatened by the soldiers.

Realizing their mistake, the soldiers quickly turned back towards the border. The area where the incident took place lacked proper delineation, with only a simple wire fence marking the border, making it easy for the soldiers to accidentally cross over.

Despite the lighthearted interactions between the volunteers and the soldiers, both Carpenter and Holeman admitted to feeling nervous and cautious, especially when documenting the soldiers’ presence on US soil. Carpenter recorded the encounter and captured videos of the soldiers, including a photo of them in a white pickup truck labeled “Guardia Nacional.”

During their search for lost migrants, Carpenter and Holeman had also come across two vehicles with Mexican plates that were riddled with bullet holes near the border, highlighting the dangers faced by migrants crossing the desert.

The presence of Mexican soldiers near the border is not uncommon, as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had previously deployed 10,000 National Guard troops to the border to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking between the two countries. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by migrants navigating the treacherous terrain of the American desert.
