Microsoft AI chief says only biological beings can be conscious
Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, recently expressed his views on artificial intelligence and consciousness at an event celebrating Microsoft’s 50th anniversary. During an interview at the AfroTech Conference in Houston, Suleyman emphasized that only biological beings are capable of consciousness and urged developers and researchers to refrain from projects suggesting otherwise.
Suleyman, a prominent figure in the AI field, has been vocal about the potential risks associated with creating AI that mimics human consciousness. In a recent essay titled “We must build AI for people; not to be a person,” he outlined his concerns about the development of seemingly conscious AI.
Despite the growing market for AI companions and the push towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), Suleyman remains steadfast in his belief that AI can never truly replicate human emotions or consciousness. He highlighted the importance of understanding the distinction between AI’s perceived experiences and actual consciousness.
While acknowledging the ongoing research in the field of AI consciousness detection, Suleyman firmly stated that pursuing projects that aim to create conscious AI is futile, as AI entities are inherently devoid of consciousness.
‘Places that we won’t go’
As part of his efforts to raise awareness about the risks of AI consciousness, Suleyman has been actively engaging with the public through speaking engagements. At the Paley International Council Summit and the AfroTech Conference, he reiterated Microsoft’s stance on not developing AI chatbots for erotic purposes.
Suleyman’s decision to join Microsoft in 2024 was influenced by the company’s commitment to AI innovation and its vast technological capabilities. He emphasized Microsoft’s focus on developing AI services that prioritize human well-being and self-sufficiency in AI development.
Recent announcements from Microsoft, including the introduction of new features for its Copilot AI service, reflect Suleyman’s vision of creating AI companions that are always in service of humans. He highlighted the importance of instilling AI personalities with values that align with user preferences and interactions.
Suleyman also discussed the concept of “real talk,” a conversational style of Copilot designed to challenge users’ perspectives. He emphasized the need for healthy skepticism and caution in AI development, urging for responsible AI accelerationism.
Overall, Suleyman’s insights shed light on the complex relationship between AI, consciousness, and human values, emphasizing the importance of ethical AI development and the need for a nuanced understanding of AI’s capabilities.
