Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of some services after review over mass surveillance of Palestinians

Microsoft has made the decision to stop providing some of its cloud and AI services to Israel’s Ministry of Defense after allegations surfaced in a report by The Guardian newspaper. The report claimed that Israel had used these services to conduct mass surveillance of Palestinians in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

According to The Guardian, Israel’s military surveillance agency, Unit 8200, utilized Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform to store recordings of millions of cellphone calls made by Palestinians. These recordings were reportedly used by intelligence officers to shape military operations in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as to prepare deadly airstrikes by identifying bombing targets.

One source revealed to The Guardian that during the planning of an airstrike on an individual in a densely populated area of Gaza, officers would analyze calls made by others in the vicinity. The use of this data was initially focused on the West Bank, where Israel’s military maintains control.

Following the publication of the report, Microsoft acknowledged that they had found evidence supporting elements of The Guardian’s reporting. The tech giant stated that they had informed the Israeli Ministry of Defense of their decision to halt and disable specific subscriptions and services being used.

Microsoft emphasized their commitment to ensuring compliance with their terms of service, particularly to prevent the mass surveillance of civilians. They are currently conducting a review of the situation, which was prompted by an earlier report about the IDF’s use of Microsoft’s Azure and AI services during the Gaza offensive.

Intelligence sources mentioned in The Guardian’s report indicated that Unit 8200 planned to transfer the intercepted data from Microsoft’s servers to the Amazon Web Services cloud platform. However, neither the Israel Defense Forces nor Amazon responded to requests for comment on this potential transfer.

As the investigation continues, Microsoft is focused on upholding ethical standards and ensuring that their services are not misused for surveillance purposes.
