Minn. ICE shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti sparks split in gun-rights movement

The recent fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a legally armed anti-ICE protester, by federal agents in Minneapolis has sparked a heated debate within the gun-rights movement. Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and licensed concealed-carry holder, was killed during an immigration enforcement operation after confronting ICE agents during a demonstration.

Video footage of the incident shows Pretti holding a cell phone as he was pepper-sprayed and wrestled to the ground by multiple officers. Moments later, shots were fired, resulting in his death. The Department of Homeland Security claimed that Pretti “violently resisted” and that agents feared for their lives, justifying the use of lethal force. However, critics, including Pretti’s family, argue that the video contradicts the official account.

The killing of Pretti has divided gun-rights groups, with some demanding investigations and accountability for law enforcement, while others rush to defend the actions of the agents involved. The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus stated that every peaceable Minnesotan has the right to keep and bear arms, even during protests or encounters with law enforcement. Gun Owners of America and the Second Amendment Foundation also condemned the shooting, raising concerns about the use of lethal force against lawful permit holders.

On the other hand, some gun-rights advocates supported law enforcement, suggesting that Pretti put himself in danger by confronting federal agents during an active operation. The National Rifle Association criticized a Trump administration prosecutor for suggesting that approaching law enforcement with a gun could justify the use of lethal force. The NRA emphasized the importance of awaiting a full investigation before making generalizations about law-abiding citizens.

Despite the controversy, some gun owners online supported the actions of the federal agents, stating that physically fighting with police officers while armed should be expected to result in consequences. The debate surrounding Pretti’s death highlights the complex intersection of gun rights, law enforcement, and constitutional accountability in the United States.
