Misan Harriman Joins BBC Doc ‘White Man Walking’ as Executive Producer

Acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Misan Harriman has recently taken on the role of executive producer for BBC Storyville’s “White Man Walking,” a documentary that delves into the complex racial dynamics of America. The film follows filmmaker Rob Bliss as he embarks on a journey through Trump’s America, wearing a Black Lives Matter t-shirt in the aftermath of George Floyd’s tragic death. His walk through rural highways and small towns in the Deep South uncovers the deep-seated divisions within the nation, showcasing both the harsh reactions to his act of solidarity and the moments of genuine connection that arise.

Harriman’s involvement in the project adds a significant level of expertise and insight. With his powerful photography capturing the essence of London’s Black Lives Matter protests and his historic British Vogue cover shoot, Harriman brings a unique perspective to the documentary. His directorial debut, “The After,” which received an Academy Award nomination, further solidifies his reputation as a groundbreaking creative force.

In a statement about his involvement in “White Man Walking,” Harriman expressed his pride in being part of a project that challenges power, privilege, and allyship. He emphasized the importance of truth-telling over comfort, highlighting the film’s intention to spark meaningful conversations about race relations in America.

The documentary, co-directed by Rob Bliss and Grierson Award winner Denise Alder, seeks to unravel the complexities of why advocating for Black lives can provoke such intense reactions, especially in marginalized white communities. It balances an exploration of fear with a broader message of empathy and understanding, urging viewers to confront their biases and preconceptions.

Produced by the Osun Group in collaboration with Doc Hearts, “White Man Walking” was commissioned by BBC Storyville’s Lucie Kon and is now available for international distribution through Mediawan Rights. Luti Fagbenle, the founder of Osun Group, praised Harriman’s storytelling abilities and his commitment to social justice, underscoring the documentary’s mission to shed light on racial and social injustices.

The production team behind the film includes industry veterans such as BAFTA winner Andy Mundy-Castle and Emmy nominee Maxine Watson as executive producers, with Georgia Cassidy overseeing production and Emmy winner Jordan Montminy handling editing duties. Associate director Afua Hirsch also contributes her expertise to the project, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of the documentary’s themes.

“White Man Walking” debuted on BBC Four in May and subsequently aired on Arte in Germany and France in June. Audiences can now access the documentary on BBC iPlayer, where its thought-provoking narrative continues to resonate with viewers around the world.
