Missed the one he wanted to score of
Virat Kohli, the star batter for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), once shared a hilarious story about his former teammate Yuzvendra Chahal’s infamous 77-ball duck in the Ranji Trophy. The incident took place during the 2018 IPL season when Kohli, Chahal, and AB de Villiers appeared on the AIB Podcast.
In the podcast, the conversation turned to Chahal’s batting prowess, or lack thereof. Kohli recounted the unforgettable moment, saying, “He’s the only guy in the history of Ranji Trophy cricket, first-class cricket, played 76 balls, scored no runs and got out stumped. Planning for the other guy to make sure he gets a 100 and then he gets out on zero. He missed the ball. 76 balls he touched every ball and then he missed the one he wanted to score off. Only guy in history.”
Chahal, who played for RCB from 2014 to 2021 before moving to Rajasthan Royals (RR) and then Punjab Kings (PBKS), is still remembered for his exceptional bowling performances. In his time at RCB, Chahal played 113 matches and picked up 139 wickets, making him the leading wicket-taker for the franchise in the IPL.
On a different note, Virat Kohli finally achieved his long-awaited dream of lifting the IPL trophy after 17 years. RCB emerged victorious in the 2025 season, defeating PBKS by six runs in the final to claim their first IPL title. Throughout the season, RCB displayed exceptional cricketing skills, finishing second in the league stage with nine wins from 14 games.
Kohli played a pivotal role in RCB’s title-winning campaign, emerging as the team’s leading run-scorer. The 36-year-old amassed 657 runs from 15 matches at an impressive average of 54.75 and a strike rate of 144.71. Kohli’s contribution with the bat, including eight half-centuries, was instrumental in RCB’s historic triumph.
As Virat Kohli celebrated his IPL success, Chahal’s infamous 77-ball duck remains a humorous anecdote from their time together at RCB. The camaraderie and banter shared between the two teammates add a lighter touch to their professional cricketing careers, showcasing the bond forged on and off the field.
